Experience the best of Palermo

Palermo, capital of Sicily, is a port city of Arab-Norman palaces, gilded mosaics, baroque crossroads and street food.

Palermo was founded by the Phoenicians and later ruled by Arabs, Normans and Spaniards, and the layers show in its buildings. The Norman Palace holds the Palatine Chapel, glittering with gold mosaics, and the cathedral mixes Norman, Gothic and Baroque styles. The Arab-Norman monuments, with the cathedrals of Monreale and Cefalù, are listed by UNESCO.

The Quattro Canti is a baroque crossroads of four curved façades, and the Pretoria Fountain, crowded with nude statues, is nicknamed the fountain of shame. The Teatro Massimo is one of Europe's largest opera houses. The Capuchin Catacombs hold preserved bodies in their corridors. Monreale is a few kilometres away, the beach of Mondello is a short ride north, and the Greek temple of Segesta stands among hills farther west.

Palermo is a city for eating on the street: panelle, chickpea fritters, in a bread roll, arancine of rice and meat, sfincione, a thick pizza, and pani ca meusa, a sandwich of spleen. The old markets of Ballarò and Capo are full of stalls. Cannoli and cassata end the meal.
