Pushkar lies in the Aravalli hills of Rajasthan, in a desert valley beside a small lake that Hindus hold sacred. Fifty-two bathing ghats and many temples surround the water, and pilgrims bathe on the full-moon night of Kartik. The Brahma temple here is one of very few in India dedicated to the creator god.
A steep climb or a cable car leads to the Savitri temple on a ridge, with a view over the lake and the dunes. In the bazaar, stalls sell silver jewellery, block-printed textiles, leather and incense, and the camel fair held on the town's edge each autumn draws herders, traders and musicians. Ajmer, with its famous Sufi shrine, is a short ride to the east.
Pushkar is vegetarian, and its cafés serve thalis, falafel, lassi and malpua, a fried pancake dunked in syrup. Roses grown in the surrounding fields are made into rosewater and gulkand, a sweet rose jam. Sunset from the ghats is a daily ritual, and nights turn cold in winter.
