Pico, in the central group of the Azores in the mid-Atlantic, is shaped like a long ridge topped by a volcanic cone, Mount Pico, which at 2,351 metres is the highest point in Portugal. The island's black basalt coast is cut with natural pools and small harbours, and the main towns are Madalena, São Roque do Pico and Lajes do Pico. The cone is often wreathed in cloud.
The vineyards of Pico, planted in small rectangular plots enclosed by walls of black lava stone, are a World Heritage landscape, and the wines include Verdelho. Lajes do Pico was a whaling town, and its museum and the whalers' lookout posts recall the days of hunting from open boats; today the waters offshore are watched for sperm whales and dolphins. The Gruta das Torres is a long lava tube, and Faial lies across a narrow channel.
Grilled limpets with garlic and lemon, fresh tuna and local cheese appear in the island's taverns, with the wines of the lava fields to drink. The climate is mild and damp all year, with plenty of showers; summer and early autumn have the clearest weather around the mountain.
