  • 5Great memory!

A big thank you and compliments to our guide, Matteo! He led us safely up to the summit and back to the starting point, sharing lots of tips along the way and telling us so much about Pico as well as the Azores in general. It was very enjoyable, and the photos and videos he took are a wonderful reminder of our trip!

  • 4Blood, Sweat & an Unforgettable Experience

Climbing Mount Pico made me a little nervous beforehand. You hear all these stories about how tough it is, so I was wondering whether my fitness would be good enough to make it to the top — and, perhaps even more importantly, to make it all the way back down again! We were expected at the Mountain House at 6:00 in the morning, while it was still pitch dark. After about 45 minutes, we finally started our climb, using headlamps that we were able to put away after about half an hour. The climb was divided into five stages, and after almost four hours of climbing, we reached the crater. After a short break, we started the final climb up the Piquinho and reached the highest point in Portugal! The climb itself was actually much easier than I had expected. It never really felt like we had been climbing for that long. But then came the descent… During the climb, we had already realised that getting back down wasn’t going to be easy, with loose rocks, large differences in height and the sun relentlessly beating down on the mountainside. After another 4.5 hours of hiking, we finally made it back to the Mountain House. It took blood, sweat and tears, but what an experience! 💪 Our guide Bruno was excellent. No unnecessary bla-bla, no excessive sympathy — just keep walking and don’t complain. I love that mentality! Would I do it again? Maybe not straight away… but it’s a definite YES! If you’re thinking of doing it yourself: don’t underestimate it! :-)

  • 5Great tour, recomended to everyone.

A greatly organized tour with an amazing guide, Bruno. He was very patient and knowledgeable. One of us rolled an ankle on the mountain, which added an extra 2.5 hours to our descent, and Bruno helped us every step of the way.

About Pico

Pico is an island in the Azores dominated by Mount Pico, Portugal's highest mountain, with black-lava vineyards, whale-watching coasts and lava caves.

Pico, in the central group of the Azores in the mid-Atlantic, is shaped like a long ridge topped by a volcanic cone, Mount Pico, which at 2,351 metres is the highest point in Portugal. The island's black basalt coast is cut with natural pools and small harbours, and the main towns are Madalena, São Roque do Pico and Lajes do Pico. The cone is often wreathed in cloud.
