Parikia, the port and capital, has a Venetian kastro built from blocks of ancient marble and the Panagia Ekatontapiliani, the Church of a Hundred Doors, said to date from the fourth century. Naoussa, on the north coast, is a fishing harbour with a small Venetian fort at the water's edge and tavernas along the quay. Sculptors in antiquity prized the island's marble, known as Parian marble.

Lefkes, an inland village of white houses and marble-paved lanes, was once the island's capital, and the old quarries at Marathi can still be visited. Chrissi Akti, or Golden Beach, draws windsurfers and kitesurfers, Kolymbithres has sculpted granite boulders in the sea, and a short ferry leads to Antiparos, a smaller island with a cave.

Local specialities include gouna, sun-dried mackerel, grilled fish and octopus, creamy cheeses and wine from the island's Monemvasia and Mandilaria grapes. In July and August the meltemi wind sweeps the island and sets the windsurfers off at Golden Beach, and the sea is warmest in September.
