Parma's cathedral and its pink-marble baptistery, begun by the sculptor Benedetto Antelami in the 1190s, stand side by side in the main piazza, and Correggio painted the swirling Assumption of the Virgin in the cathedral dome. The Palazzo della Pilotta, a vast Farnese palace, holds the National Gallery and the wooden Teatro Farnese. The Teatro Regio is one of Italy's respected opera houses, and Verdi and Toscanini both have strong ties to the city.

Parma was once the capital of a duchy, ruled by the Farnese and later by Marie Louise of Austria, the second wife of Napoleon, which explains the grand palaces and the formal Parco Ducale. In the countryside, the fifteenth-century castle of Torrechiara, the moated Rocca Sanvitale at Fontanellato and Busseto, Verdi's home ground, lie among fields and villages. The thermal town of Salsomaggiore sits in the foothills.

Parmigiano Reggiano, aged for months in dairies around the city, and Prosciutto di Parma are the stars, with tortelli d'erbetta, anolini in broth and torta fritta served with cured meats. Malvasia and Lambrusco fizz in the glasses, and UNESCO named Parma a Creative City of Gastronomy. Spring and early autumn are the pleasantest seasons.
