Pamukkale, meaning cotton castle in Turkish, is a long slope of white travertine terraces and shallow pools, formed by mineral-rich hot water running down the hillside. At the top lie the ruins of Hierapolis, a Greek and Roman spa city founded in the second century BC, and together they form a UNESCO World Heritage site. Warm spring water still fills the pools.

The Roman theatre of Hierapolis climbs the slope with steep rows of seats, and the great necropolis outside the city holds hundreds of tombs. The Antique Pool has sunken marble columns lying in warm water. Nearby are the Temple of Apollo and the Plutonium, a cave once thought to be a gate to the underworld, and the Martyrium of St Philip. Karahayıt has red springs, Laodikeia is an ancient city a few kilometres away, and Aphrodisias lies about a hundred kilometres west.

Denizli, the city below the terraces, is known for its crowing roosters and for tandır, lamb or beef cooked slowly in a clay oven. Gözleme and a full Turkish breakfast are served in the village guesthouses, and the terraces glow best in the early morning and at sunset.
