Marmaris sits at the head of a long, sheltered bay surrounded by pine-covered mountains, and the harbour is lined with moored yachts and gulets. The small castle above the old quarter was rebuilt by Suleiman the Magnificent in 1522, when he gathered his fleet here before sailing against Rhodes, and it now houses a museum. Whitewashed lanes of the old town lead down to the bazaar.

Beaches stretch along the bay at İçmeler, and boats cross to Rhodes in about an hour. The Datça peninsula to the west has fishing villages and the ruins of Knidos at its tip, and Bozburun, a boatbuilding village, lies to the south. Dalyan, with its river, mud baths and rock tombs, and İztuzu beach, where loggerhead turtles nest, lie to the east.

Local seafood is served along the harbour, with grilled fish, calamari and meze, and gözleme and pide are baked in the bazaar. Pine honey, which is harvested in the forests around the bay, is a regional speciality.
