Experience the best of Leh

Leh, the main town of Ladakh high in the Himalaya, is a Buddhist trading centre with a hilltop palace, monasteries and desert mountain scenery.

Leh stands at about 3,500 metres in the Indus Valley, with bare brown mountains around it and snow ranges behind. The nine-storey Leh Palace, built in the 17th century in the style of the Potala in Lhasa, overlooks the old town, and the Namgyal Tsemo monastery crowns the ridge above it. The Shanti Stupa, a white-domed peace pagoda, has views across the valley.

Thiksey and Hemis monasteries, Spituk and the royal palace at Shey lie a short way up and down the valley, and Alchi, to the west, is known for its monastery murals, among the oldest in Ladakh. The road to Nubra Valley crosses the Khardung La pass to sand dunes where double-humped camels graze, and the Indus and Zanskar rivers meet at Nimmu.

Ladakh is a cold desert, warm and sunny from June to September when the mountain passes open, and very cold and dry in winter. Momos, thukpa noodle soup, skyu, a pasta stew, and salty butter tea fill the cafés, bakeries sell Ladakhi breads and apricot jam, and barley beer called chhang is shared at village gatherings.
