Korčula Town sits on a small peninsula at the island's eastern end, its medieval walls and round towers rising straight from the sea. The streets inside branch off the main one like the bones of a fish, a plan that lets sea breezes in. St Mark's Cathedral has a belltower that dominates the skyline, and a house said to be Marco Polo's birthplace stands nearby.
Korčula is a long island of pine woods, vineyards and olive groves, with sandy bays at Lumbarda to the east and villages such as Smokvica and Čara in the vine country, known for the white wine Pošip. In summer the Moreška, a sword dance of knights and moors, is performed in the old town. Across the channel, the Pelješac peninsula brings the great walls of Ston and the oyster beds of Mali Ston.
Hand-rolled žrnovski makaruni with a meat sauce, grilled fish, lamb or octopus baked under an iron bell, and cukarin, an almond and lemon cake, are Korčula's classic dishes, with Pošip and the red Plavac mali to drink. Summers are warm and dry, the sea clear, and the quiet shoulder months suit the old town's stone lanes.
