Kalamata lies at the head of the Messenian Gulf, with the Taygetus range rising behind it. The old town below its 13th-century Frankish castle has narrow lanes, Byzantine churches and a railway park of old locomotives. It was among the first Greek towns to join the uprising of 1821, and its seafront is lined with palms and cafés.

Ancient Messene, to the north-west, is one of the best-preserved ancient sites in Greece, with a stadium, theatre and fortress walls. South of Kalamata, the Mani peninsula has stone tower houses and the Diros Caves, where boats glide through underground waters. To the west, the Venetian castles of Methoni and Koroni guard the Messenian coast, and Pylos and Navarino Bay are close to the crescent beach of Voidokilia.

Kalamata olives, large and dark purple, are cured in brine and shipped around the world, and the region's olive oil is pressed in groves that cover the valleys. Summers are hot and dry and winters mild, and the olive harvest runs from November to January. Dried figs and halva are the local sweets.
