Experience the best of Juneau
Juneau is Alaska's capital, a small harbour city beneath steep forested mountains, reachable only by air or sea and close to glaciers.

Juneau sits on the Gastineau Channel in the Alaska Panhandle, squeezed between the water and the steep slopes of Mount Juneau and Mount Roberts, with the Juneau Icefield behind. No road connects it to the rest of North America. The city grew after gold was found in 1880, and the Alaska State Capitol, a columned building of the 1930s, the octagonal Russian Orthodox church of St Nicholas and the old downtown streets recall that past.
Mendenhall Glacier, a river of ice flowing into a lake about twenty kilometres from downtown, is the best-known sight. Humpback whales feed in the channels in summer, and boats search for orcas and sea lions. Tracy Arm and Glacier Bay lie within reach by boat or plane, Admiralty Island is a forest of brown bears, and a tramway climbs Mount Roberts for views over the channel.
Wild salmon, halibut, Dungeness crab and king crab are the local food, often grilled or smoked, and reindeer sausage is sold at stalls. Craft beer is brewed in town. Summers are cool, green and long in daylight, with plenty of rain, and the temperate rainforest of the Tongass National Forest surrounds the city.
