Isla Mujeres lies a few kilometres off the Yucatán coast opposite Cancún, a narrow island about seven kilometres long with the town at its northern end. The Spanish named it the Isle of Women in 1517 after finding clay figures of goddesses there. Golf carts and bicycles are the usual way to get around, and Playa Norte, a shallow beach of white sand and calm turquoise water, fronts the town.
At the southern tip, Punta Sur has sculptures, a lighthouse, cliffs and the ruins of a small Maya temple to Ixchel, goddess of the moon and fertility. A turtle farm cares for sea turtles, and the reefs offshore, with a museum of underwater sculptures, draw snorkellers and divers. Whale sharks gather in the waters to the north from about June to September, and Isla Contoy, an uninhabited bird sanctuary, is a boat ride away.
Tikin xic, fish rubbed with achiote paste and grilled in banana leaf, is the island's classic, with fresh ceviche, lobster, fish tacos and lime soup on the menus. Summers are hot and wet, the winter months from December to April are drier and breezier, and the sea is warm all year.
