Hyderabad was founded in 1591 by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah, and the Charminar, a granite and lime-mortar monument with four minarets, marks the heart of the old city. Around it lie the Laad Bazaar, famed for bangles, and the Mecca Masjid, while the Chowmahalla Palace shows how the Nizams, who ruled later, lived. The Salar Jung Museum holds an enormous private collection.
Golconda Fort, on a granite hill at the western edge of the city, was the citadel of the Qutb Shahi dynasty and a famous source of diamonds, and the domed Qutb Shahi Tombs stand nearby. Hussain Sagar, a large lake, has a giant stone Buddha on an island, and HITEC City, a newer district, is a technology hub. Ramoji Film City, one of the largest film studio complexes, lies on the outskirts.
Hyderabadi dum biryani, rice and meat sealed in a pot and cooked slowly, is the city's most famous dish, and haleem, a rich meat porridge, appears in Ramadan. Irani chai and Osmania biscuits are taken in old cafés, with khubani ka meetha, a dessert of apricots, to follow. Pearl dealers in the lanes around the Charminar have given Hyderabad its nickname, the City of Pearls.
