The valley follows the Hunter River inland from Newcastle, with the main wine district around Pokolbin and the town of Cessnock at its gateway. Vines have grown here since the 1820s, which makes it one of Australia's oldest wine regions, and semillon whites and shiraz reds are its best-known bottles. Many cellar doors sit among gum trees and lawns, with long views across the rows.
The Hunter Valley Gardens at Pokolbin are a large display garden of themed beds and lakes. Further up the river, Scone calls itself the horse capital of Australia, and thoroughbred studs spread across the Upper Hunter. To the north, Barrington Tops National Park, part of a World Heritage rainforest listing, climbs to a cool plateau of snow gums and tree ferns.
Lunch here often means a long table under the vines, with platters of local cheese, olives and produce. Hunter semillon is picked early and low in alcohol, then ages in the bottle into a rich, toasty wine. Harvest falls in January and February, summer days are hot, and autumn turns the vine leaves gold.
