Hua Hin is a seaside town in Prachuap Khiri Khan province, on the west side of the Gulf of Thailand about 200 kilometres south of Bangkok. Thai royalty began building seaside palaces here in the 1920s, which gave the town its first fame as a resort, and Klai Kangwon Palace still stands nearby. The railway station, a Thai-style wooden building, dates from that era, and a fishing pier runs out beside the main beach.
Khao Takiab, a headland at the south end of the beach, has a temple on top and a troop of monkeys. Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park, further south, has limestone peaks, freshwater marshes and the Phraya Nakhon cave, where a small royal pavilion stands beneath a skylight. Kaeng Krachan National Park, a forest park in the hills, lies to the north-west.
Squid, crab and prawns are grilled at the pier restaurants, the night market sells snacks and coconut ice cream, and the pineapples of Prachuap Khiri Khan are sold at roadside stalls. The cooler months from November to February are the most comfortable, and the rains fall from June to October.
