Koh Samui, one of Thailand's largest islands, is ringed by coconut palms and beaches, with a hilly jungle interior. Chaweng has the longest stretch of white sand and the liveliest nightlife, Lamai is quieter, and Bophut's Fisherman's Village keeps old wooden shophouses by the shore. On a small islet joined to the north-east shore by a causeway, the 12-metre seated Big Buddha looks across the water.
Wat Plai Laem has an eighteen-armed statue of Guanyin, the Na Muang waterfalls drop through the forest, and the Hin Ta and Hin Yai rocks at Lamai are known as Grandfather and Grandmother. Boats take visitors to Ang Thong National Marine Park, an archipelago of limestone islands with a lagoon and kayaking routes, and to Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, the latter a well-known diving base. The mainland is reachable by ferry.
Southern Thai cooking brings coconut curries, grilled fish and prawns, tom yum soup, fresh coconuts and mango with sticky rice, along with plenty of evening street markets. Samui's weather runs against the Andaman coast: the island is driest from January to April, and the heaviest rain falls from October to December.
