Ko Lanta is a pair of islands in Krabi province, Ko Lanta Noi and the much larger Ko Lanta Yai, which is the one with the beaches and villages. Ferries arrive at Sala Dan on its northern tip, and a road runs south along the west coast past a string of beaches, among them Klong Dao, Phra Ae, Klong Khong and Kantiang Bay, where sand backs onto hills and rubber plantations.
On the east coast, Lanta Old Town is a village of wooden houses on stilts, once a trading port, and its quiet lanes are lined with cafés. The Urak Lawoi, a sea people, have fishing villages on the south-east shore. At the southern end, Mu Ko Lanta National Park has a lighthouse, forest trails and a quiet beach, and boats reach snorkelling reefs at Ko Rok and the dive sites of Hin Daeng and Hin Muang. Ko Phi Phi and Krabi are within reach by boat.
Southern Thai cooking relies on seafood and spice: massaman curry, grilled prawns, crab and squid, roti with banana, and fresh coconut. Many restaurants sit on the sand beside the water. The dry season from November to April brings calm seas and clear skies, while the monsoon from May to October brings rain, waves and quieter beaches.
