Ko Phi Phi Don is the larger of two main islands in the Phi Phi group, off the coast of Krabi province in southern Thailand. Its two bays, Ton Sai and Loh Dalum, curve back to back on either side of a narrow sandy isthmus, with limestone cliffs climbing behind. There are almost no motor vehicles on the island, only footpaths and boats, and the village around the pier is a tight cluster of guesthouses, cafés and dive shops.
A short climb leads to a viewpoint above the isthmus with the double-bay panorama. Longtail boats go to Phi Phi Leh, the smaller island, with Maya Bay, where The Beach was filmed, and the Viking Cave, to Monkey Beach and Bamboo Island, and to reefs where blacktip reef sharks and colourful fish can be seen by snorkellers. The islands belong to a national park, and ferries link them with Phuket, Krabi and Ko Lanta.
Seafood grilled on the beach, pad thai, banana roti, mango with sticky rice and fresh coconuts make up the menu, and Muslim fishing families live on the island. The dry months from November to April are the calmest, while the monsoon from May to October brings rougher seas.
