Surat Thani sits on the Tapi River in southern Thailand, a few kilometres from the Gulf coast, and is the main transport hub for the islands of Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, which lie offshore. Ferries leave from piers outside the city, while the town centre keeps a riverfront promenade, markets and a night food market. Fishing boats work the river mouth and the bay.

Khao Sok National Park, about a hundred kilometres west, is a rainforest of limestone cliffs and a huge lake, home to gibbons, hornbills and the giant Rafflesia flower. Wat Phra Boromathat Chaiya, to the north in the old town of Chaiya, holds a stupa from the era of the Srivijaya kingdom. Suan Mokkh, a forest monastery, offers meditation courses.

Oysters from nearby Bandon Bay are a local pride, and southern Thai cooking is hot and sour, with kua kling, a dry meat curry, khanom jeen noodles with curry sauce, and roti with banana. The city is warm all year, with a short, heavy rainy season in the last months of the year.
