The west coast is lined with beaches, from busy Patong with its nightlife on Bangla Road to the gentler sands of Kata, Karon, Kamala and Surin, and the quieter bays of Nai Harn and Mai Khao. Promthep Cape at the southern tip is a favourite spot for sunset.

Phuket Old Town preserves Sino-Portuguese shophouses painted in pastel colours along Thalang Road and Soi Romanee, with cafés, galleries and a weekly walking-street market. The Big Buddha, a white marble statue, sits on a hilltop with views across the island, and Wat Chalong is its most important temple. Boats leave for the limestone towers of Phang Nga Bay, including James Bond Island, and for the Phi Phi and Similan islands for snorkelling and diving.

Massaman and yellow curries, fresh seafood, and Phuket's own Hokkien noodles and dim sum breakfasts show the spice and Chinese heritage of the south. The dry season from November to April brings calm seas and clear skies, the southwest monsoon from about May to October brings rain and rougher waves on the west coast, and in autumn the Vegetarian Festival brings processions, firecrackers and meat-free street food to the old town.
