Koh Tao is a small, hilly island in the Gulf of Thailand, in Surat Thani province, north of Koh Phangan and Koh Samui, and its name means Turtle Island. Mae Haad, the pier village on the west coast, is the arrival point, and Sairee Beach to the north has a long strip of sand lined with bars and dive shops. Rocky coves and jungle-covered hills fill the rest of the island, with a lookout at John-Suwan viewpoint.

The island is one of the places where many people learn to scuba dive, thanks to its warm water and shallow reefs. Shark Bay and Freedom Beach are good for snorkelling, and Koh Nang Yuan, three small islets joined by a sandbar just off the north-west coast, is a short boat ride from Mae Haad. Sail Rock, a granite pinnacle between Koh Tao and Koh Phangan, draws divers.

Thai seafood barbecues, green curries, pad thai, mango with sticky rice and fresh coconuts are available on the beach and in the village. Days are warm all year, the sea is calmest from about March to September, and the heaviest rain falls from October to December.
