Experience the best of Chiang Mai
Chiang Mai is northern Thailand's cultural capital, a moated old city of temples, markets and crafts surrounded by forested mountains.

The old city, ringed by a square moat and the remains of brick walls, holds dozens of temples, among them the elegant Wat Phra Singh and the ruined great chedi of Wat Chedi Luang. Above town, Wat Phra That Doi Suthep crowns a mountain, reached by a staircase lined with serpents, with views across the valley.
The Night Bazaar and the Sunday walking street are packed with handicrafts, and the Nimmanhaemin area has cafés and design shops. Cooking classes, elephant sanctuaries and treks to hill-tribe villages are popular, as are trips to Doi Inthanon, Thailand's highest peak, and to the dazzling White Temple near Chiang Rai.
Northern Thai food differs from the south: khao soi curry noodles, sai ua sausage and chilli dips eaten with sticky rice. The cool season from November to February is the most pleasant, when the Loy Krathong and Yi Peng festivals fill the rivers with candles and the sky with lanterns. Spring is hot and hazy, and the rainy season turns the hills a deep green.
