Experience the best of Günzburg

Günzburg lies on the Danube where the Günz river joins it, between Ulm and Augsburg. The Romans built a fort here called Guntia, and in the Middle Ages the town became the seat of the Habsburg margraves of Burgau, whose palace still stands in the old town. The Frauenkirche, built in the 1730s and 1740s by the architect Dominikus Zimmermann, is a masterpiece of Rococo, light and richly painted inside.

A large family theme park built from toy bricks stands on the town's edge, drawing visitors from across southern Germany. Ulm, to the west, has the tallest church spire in the world, at 161 metres, on its minster. Augsburg lies further to the east, and the Danube cycle path follows the river past the town.

Swabian cooking is hearty: lentils with noodles and sausage, Maultaschen and Zwiebelrostbraten, roast beef under fried onions. Beer gardens by the river fill on warm evenings. Spring blossom in the fields along the Danube is a pleasant time for gentle walks and rides.
