Experience the best of Heidelberg
Heidelberg is a university town on the Neckar in south-west Germany, with a ruined red-sandstone castle, an old stone bridge and a long main street.

Heidelberg sits where the Neckar leaves its wooded valley and enters the Rhine plain in Baden-Württemberg. The castle above the old town, built in red sandstone and left half ruined by French armies in the 1690s and a lightning strike in 1764, holds the Great Tun, a barrel that can hold over 200,000 litres of wine. The Old Bridge, with its twin-towered gate, crosses the river, and the Hauptstrasse runs for over a kilometre through the pedestrian old town.
Germany's oldest university was founded here in 1386, and student life gives the old town its mood, from the Student Prison with its graffiti-covered cells to the Marktplatz and the Church of the Holy Spirit. The Philosophenweg climbs the slope across the river with views back to the castle. Neckar valley castles line the river to the east, and Schwetzingen's palace gardens and Speyer's Romanesque cathedral are an easy trip.
Studentenkuss, a chocolate with a wafer base, is a sweet Heidelberg tradition, with flammkuchen, Maultaschen and Spätzle on the menus. Spring brings blossom and summer evenings suit the riverbank, and in autumn the vine slopes turn gold over glasses of Riesling and Spätburgunder from the Bergstraße vineyards.
