The Brandenburg Gate is the city's symbol, close to the glass-domed Reichstag and the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe. Fragments of the Berlin Wall survive, most strikingly at the East Side Gallery, a long stretch covered in murals, and at the Bernauer Strasse memorial, while Checkpoint Charlie marks the most famous former crossing point.

Museum Island on the Spree gathers five major museums, among them the Neues Museum with the bust of Nefertiti, and Berlin Cathedral and the TV Tower at Alexanderplatz rise nearby. Charlottenburg Palace and the Kurfürstendamm show the elegant west, while Kreuzberg, Neukölln and Prenzlauer Berg are lively with cafés, markets and bars. The Tiergarten and Tempelhof Field, a former airport, are vast open spaces.
