Experience the best of Munich
Munich is the Bavarian capital, with a rebuilt old town, beer gardens, royal palaces and the Alps visible on clear days to the south.

Marienplatz, the main square, is overlooked by the neo-Gothic New Town Hall, whose Glockenspiel chimes with mechanical figures, and by the twin onion-domed towers of the Frauenkirche. The Viktualienmarkt close by is a food market with a beer garden. The Residenz, the former home of Bavaria's rulers, has lavish halls and a treasury, and Nymphenburg Palace stands in a park to the west.
The English Garden is one of the largest city parks in Europe, where surfers ride a standing wave on the Eisbach river and a beer garden by the Chinese Tower fills in summer. The Deutsches Museum covers science and technology on an island in the Isar, the Pinakothek museums hold European painting, and the Olympic Park recalls the 1972 Games. Neuschwanstein Castle, Lake Starnberg and the Zugspitze, Germany's highest peak, are all day trips, as is Salzburg across the border.
Bavarian tables bring white sausages, Weisswurst, with sweet mustard and soft pretzels, roast pork knuckle, potato dumplings and big steins of beer under the chestnut trees of the beer gardens. Oktoberfest takes over the Theresienwiese for more than two weeks, starting in the second half of September. Summers are warm; winter has Christmas markets and snow, and the Alps give skiing within two hours.
