A bowl-shaped valley on the Neckar, ringed by wooded hills and vineyards, holds Stuttgart. Mercedes-Benz and Porsche both have their headquarters here, and each has its own museum. The Schlossplatz is dominated by the Neues Schloss, a baroque palace, and the Staatsgalerie holds art from the old masters to the modern age.

The Fernsehturm, a television tower from 1956, was the first of its kind built in reinforced concrete and stands above the valley. The Wilhelma is a zoo and botanical garden in the Moorish style, in Bad Cannstatt, where mineral springs still flow. Ludwigsburg Palace and Esslingen's old town are a short ride away, and Tübingen and the edge of the Black Forest are not much farther.

Maultaschen, large pasta parcels with a meat and spinach filling, and spätzle, soft egg noodles, with lentils and sausages, are the Swabian classics, served with local Riesling or Trollinger from the hillside vineyards. The autumn fair at Cannstatt is one of Germany's biggest, and the city's Christmas market is among its oldest.
