Experience the best of Dresden
Dresden, on the Elbe in Saxony, is a baroque city of domes and palaces rebuilt after the Second World War, with art museums and river views.

Dresden grew rich under the Saxon electors, notably Augustus the Strong, who filled the city with baroque palaces and collections. The Frauenkirche, whose great stone dome dominates the skyline, was destroyed in the bombing of February 1945 and rebuilt, reopening in 2005. The Zwinger, a baroque palace of pavilions and courtyards, and the Semper Opera House stand close together in the old town.
The Brühl Terrace gives a promenade above the Elbe, and the Procession of Princes, a long mural of Meissen porcelain tiles, runs along a wall of the old town. The Residenzschloss holds the Green Vault of royal treasures, and the Old Masters Gallery shows Raphael's Sistine Madonna. Meissen, home of the porcelain, lies down the river, Moritzburg Castle and Pillnitz Palace are close, and the rock formations of Saxon Switzerland, with the Bastei bridge, are within easy reach.
Eierschecke, a custard-topped cake, and Christstollen, the dense fruit bread of the Christmas season, are Dresden's traditional sweets. The Striezelmarkt is among the oldest Christmas markets in Germany. Vineyards cover the Elbe slopes at Radebeul, and the Neustadt district across the river has bars and courtyards.
