Experience the best of Nuremberg
Nuremberg, in Franconia in northern Bavaria, is a walled medieval city of sandstone churches, an imperial castle and Christmas markets.

Nuremberg's old town sits inside a ring of medieval walls, crowned by the Kaiserburg, the imperial castle that was a residence of Holy Roman emperors. Below it, half-timbered houses and sandstone churches line the lanes by the Pegnitz river. The painter Albrecht Dürer lived in a house near the castle that is now a museum, and the Hauptmarkt square is dominated by the ornate Beautiful Fountain. Much of the old town was rebuilt after the Second World War.
The city has a darker history, too. The Documentation Centre at the former Nazi Party rally grounds explains the 1930s, and Courtroom 600 in the Palace of Justice, where the Nuremberg Trials were held in 1945 and 1946, is a historical site. The Germanisches Nationalmuseum covers German art and culture, and a toy museum reflects the city's old trade. Bamberg and Rothenburg ob der Tauber are within a day trip.
Nürnberger Rostbratwürste, thumb-sized grilled sausages, are served by the half-dozen or more with sauerkraut or potato salad, and Lebkuchen, spiced gingerbread, is the city's sweet. Franconian beer and wine fill the taverns. The Christkindlesmarkt, one of the best-known Christmas markets in Germany, fills the main square each December.
