Hamburg lies on the Elbe, about a hundred kilometres from the North Sea, and trade made it rich as a Hanseatic city. The Speicherstadt, a district of red-brick warehouses on timber piles beside canals, is listed by UNESCO together with the neighbouring Kontorhaus quarter. Beyond it the Elbphilharmonie concert hall rises from an old warehouse, with a public viewing terrace over the harbour.

The Alster, a lake in the middle of the city, has boat trips and sailing, and the Planten un Blomen park has gardens and water. St Michael's Church, known as the Michel, has a copper-green tower with views, and the St Pauli district along the Reeperbahn is where the Beatles played early in their career. The old town of Lübeck is about an hour away, and the Lüneburg Heath lies to the south.

A Fischbrötchen, a bread roll with pickled herring or smoked fish, is the harbour snack, Labskaus is a sailors' dish of corned beef, potato and beetroot, and the Franzbrötchen, a flat cinnamon pastry, comes from the city's bakeries. The Sunday fish market by the Elbe starts at dawn. The Elbe breezes keep the weather changeable, and summer evenings stay light until late.
