Experience the best of Rostock
Rostock is an old Hanseatic port on Germany's Baltic coast, with brick Gothic churches, a historic university and the beach resort of Warnemünde.

Rostock grew rich as a Hanseatic trading port on the Warnow river, and its university, founded in 1419, is among the oldest in northern Europe. The brick Gothic Marienkirche holds an astronomical clock from 1472 that still keeps time. The Neuer Markt is dominated by the town hall, whose seven slender turrets rise above a baroque front, and the Kröpeliner Tor is a medieval gate at the end of the pedestrian street.
Warnemünde, at the mouth of the river, has a broad sandy beach, a lighthouse, and the Alter Strom channel lined with fishing boats and cafés. Inland, the Cistercian minster at Bad Doberan is a fine brick church, and a steam railway runs from there to the coast at Kühlungsborn. The Fischland-Darß peninsula, with beaches and old forest, begins to the north-east, while Wismar and Stralsund, both Hanseatic towns, lie on either side.
Fischbrötchen, bread rolls filled with herring, smoked fish or sprats, are sold from stalls and boats, and sea buckthorn, a bright orange Baltic berry, appears in juices and liqueurs. The sea breeze is cool even in summer, and in August the Hanse Sail brings historic ships to the harbour.
