Freiburg im Breisgau lies in the south-west corner of Germany, near the borders with France and Switzerland, at the foot of the Black Forest. Its minster, a Gothic church of red sandstone with an openwork spire, rises above a market square where traders sell produce, flowers and long red sausages. Little channels called Bächle run through the old town's streets, and the medieval gates of Martinstor and Schwabentor still stand.
The Schlossberg hill gives views over the red-tiled roofs, and the Schauinslandbahn cable car climbs a Black Forest peak above the city. Freiburg is known for its university, founded in 1457, and for the eco-minded Vauban district. Titisee lake, the Feldberg summit and hill villages lie to the east, while Colmar and the Alsace wine road are across the Rhine to the west.
Black Forest ham, Flammkuchen and Black Forest gateau fill the menus, with Baden wines from the Kaiserstuhl and Markgräflerland vineyards poured in the city's wine taverns. The city is among the warmest and sunniest in Germany, so summers are hot, and spring and autumn are comfortable.
