Experience the best of Dijon

Dijon, the old capital of the dukes of Burgundy, is a city of half-timbered houses, coloured tile roofs, mustard and the wine road south.

Dijon was the capital of the dukes of Burgundy, and its centre keeps their legacy in the Palace of the Dukes and Estates, whose fine arts museum holds the ducal tombs and a wide collection of paintings. The Tour Philippe le Bon climbs to a view over rooftops of coloured tiles, and half-timbered houses and mansions line streets such as Rue des Forges. A trail of markers set into the pavement leads walkers past the sights, among them the small carved owl on Notre-Dame.

South of the city, the Route des Grands Crus follows the Côte d'Or through villages such as Gevrey-Chambertin and Nuits-Saint-Georges to Beaune, with its glazed-tile Hospices. The vineyards' small named plots, or climats, form a UNESCO-listed landscape. The Canal de Bourgogne offers towpath walks, and the Cistercian abbey of Cîteaux lies a short way south.

Dijon mustard comes from here, along with pain d'épices, a spiced honey cake, and crème de cassis, which mixed with white wine becomes a kir, named for a former mayor. Beef stewed in red wine, snails in garlic butter, jambon persillé and the strong Époisses cheese complete a Burgundian table. Autumn is harvest time, spring and early summer are mild, and winters are cold and grey.
