Dharamsala climbs a forested spur of the Dhauladhar range in the Kangra valley of Himachal Pradesh. The upper town, McLeod Ganj, has been the base of the Tibetan exile community and the Dalai Lama since 1960. Its Tsuglagkhang temple complex stands near a Tibetan museum, prayer flags flutter along the lanes, and monks in maroon robes walk between monasteries, shops and cafés.
Bhagsu has a small temple and a waterfall, and the trail to Triund, a high meadow ridge facing the snow peaks, is a popular day hike. At Dharamsala's cricket ground, the Dhauladhar peaks rise directly behind the pitch. Lower in the valley, Kangra Fort is an old hill fortress, the Masroor rock-cut temples are carved from a sandstone ridge, and Palampur has tea gardens on its slopes.
Momos, thukpa noodle soup, Tibetan bread and butter tea are staples in the cafés, and Himachali meals feature rice with lentils, rajma beans and siddu, a steamed bread. The air is cool and scented with pine. Rain is heavy from July to September, winter brings snow to the upper slopes, and spring and autumn have the clearest views of the peaks.
