Experience the best of Delphi

Delphi is an ancient sanctuary and modern village on the slopes of Mount Parnassus in central Greece, where the oracle of Apollo once spoke.

Delphi was the most important oracle of the ancient Greek world, dedicated to the god Apollo, and its sanctuary climbs the mountain slope in terraces. Visitors walk the Sacred Way past treasuries built by Greek cities, the ruins of the temple of Apollo, and the theatre and stadium higher up. Lower down the road, the round Tholos at the sanctuary of Athena Pronaia is one of the best-known sights of the site.

The Delphi Archaeological Museum holds the Charioteer, a bronze statue from about 470 BCE that is one of the finest surviving Greek bronzes. The Pythian Games were held here in honour of Apollo, and the village of Arachova lies a short drive up the road, with walks across the slopes of Parnassus.

Mountain food here is simple and good: lamb cooked on the spit, village bread, local honey, and formaella, a hard cheese from nearby Arachova, with wine from the slopes around. Spring and autumn are the best seasons for walking. Summer is hot in the valley, and winter brings snow to Parnassus.
