Experience the best of Cusco

Cusco, the old Inca capital high in the Peruvian Andes, blends massive stone walls with colonial churches and is the gateway to Machu Picchu.

The Plaza de Armas is the heart of the city, framed by the cathedral and the Jesuit church of La Compañía. Inca stonework survives throughout the centre, most famously at the Qorikancha, the sun temple on which the Spanish built a monastery, and in the twelve-angled stone on Hatun Rumiyoc street. San Blas, the artisans' quarter, climbs steeply with workshops and cafés.

Above town, the zigzag walls of Sacsayhuamán overlook the rooftops, and the Sacred Valley stretches below with Pisac's terraces, the fortress-town of Ollantaytambo, the salt pans of Maras and the circular terraces of Moray. Trains and the Inca Trail lead from the valley to Machu Picchu, the citadel set on a ridge above the Urubamba River, and the striped slopes of Rainbow Mountain draw hardy hikers.

At well over three thousand metres, Cusco is best taken slowly at first, with coca tea and gentle walks while you adjust to the altitude. Andean cooking brings alpaca, roast guinea pig, potatoes in endless varieties and hearty quinoa soups. The dry season from May to September brings clear skies and cold nights, and each June the Inca festival of the sun, Inti Raymi, is re-enacted with great pageantry at Sacsayhuamán.
