Experience the best of Iquitos
Iquitos is a river city in the Peruvian Amazon, reached only by air or water, a port of rubber-boom mansions and stilt-house neighbourhoods.

Iquitos stands on the Amazon in the Peruvian rainforest, and no road links it to the rest of the country; people and goods arrive by river or by air. The city flourished in the late nineteenth-century rubber boom, and some mansions of that time survive, with tiled façades, around the Plaza de Armas. The Malecón Tarapacá, a riverfront promenade, looks out over the water.
Belén, at the edge of the city, is a market district and a neighbourhood of houses on stilts and rafts that rise and fall with the river. Boats go upstream to the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve, a huge flooded forest, and to lodges where pink river dolphins, macaws and monkeys can be seen. A rescue centre near the city cares for Amazon manatees, and canopy walkways reach high into the trees.
Juanes, rice wrapped in leaves with chicken, tacacho, mashed plantain balls with cured pork, and paiche, a giant river fish, are the dishes of the region. Camu camu and aguaje are local fruits made into juices and ice creams. The river is highest from December to May and lowest from June to November, and the heat is constant.
