The Sacred Valley follows the Urubamba River, also called the Vilcanota, through the Andes north-west of Cusco. It lies lower than the city, so the air is warmer and the land greener. The Incas farmed the valley intensively, and stone-walled terraces still climb its hillsides. Villages such as Pisac, Urubamba and Ollantaytambo lie along the river, with snow peaks above.

Pisac has Inca ruins on a spur above the town and a crafts market below. Ollantaytambo is a fortress and a living Inca town, with stone-lined streets and a huge terraced hillside, and trains for Machu Picchu leave from here. Moray has circular terraces that form a natural amphitheatre, the Maras salt pans are a stepped mosaic of white pools, and Chinchero is known for hand-woven textiles.

The valley is known for its large-kernelled white corn, called choclo, eaten with cheese, and for river trout, roast guinea pig and pachamanca, a meal baked in a pit of hot stones. Chicha de jora, a corn beer, is poured in village shops, and the dry months from May to September bring sunny days and cold nights.
