Ica lies in a dry river valley on Peru's southern coast, a green strip of vineyards, cotton fields and orchards between the Pacific and the Andean foothills. The Ica Regional Museum holds mummies, textiles and trophy heads from the Paracas, Nazca and Inca cultures, and the colonial centre has a plaza with a cathedral. The region is one of Peru's centres of pisco, the grape brandy, and many bodegas on the roads around town make it.
Five kilometres from the city, Huacachina is a small lagoon ringed by palms and huge sand dunes, where dune buggies and sandboards are the entertainment. Further south the Nazca Lines, huge figures scratched into the desert floor, are seen from small planes, and to the north-west Paracas National Reserve meets the sea with red-sand beaches and the Ballestas Islands, home to sea lions and seabirds. Chincha, to the north, is the heart of Afro-Peruvian music and dance.
Tejas, soft caramel sweets filled with nuts or fruit, are the sweet of Ica, pisco sour is the drink, and carapulcra, a stew of dried potato with pork and peanuts, belongs to the region. Wine and pisco festivals follow the grape harvest in March. The skies are sunny almost all year, with warm summers and mild winters.
