The historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, revolves around the Plaza Mayor, with the cathedral, the Government Palace and the Archbishop's Palace with its carved wooden balconies. The Monastery of San Francisco hides catacombs beneath its yellow church, and the colonial mansions around it recall the riches of the viceroyalty.
Miraflores and Barranco, on the cliffs above the ocean, are the most popular neighbourhoods: Miraflores with its parks and paragliders drifting over the clifftop Malecón, Barranco with its bohemian bars, street art and the little Bridge of Sighs. Huaca Pucllana, an adobe pyramid, rises among apartment blocks, and the Larco Museum holds a remarkable collection of pre-Columbian art.
Lima is famous for its cooking: ceviche cured in lime, Nikkei dishes blending Japanese and Peruvian flavours, lomo saltado and pisco sours. Summer, from December to April, is warm and sunny, while winter brings mild temperatures and a grey coastal mist known as garúa. The city is a gateway to Cusco, the Amazon and the desert peninsula of Paracas.
