Puerto Maldonado stands where the Tambopata River joins the Madre de Dios in the south-eastern Peruvian Amazon, not far from the borders with Bolivia and Brazil. It is the capital of the Madre de Dios region, a hot, humid lowland town of motorbikes and riverside docks, linked to the Andes and to Brazil by the Interoceanic Highway.

The surrounding forest is among the most biodiverse on earth. Tambopata National Reserve, reached by boat up the river to jungle lodges, is home to macaws, giant otters, caimans and monkeys, and the clay licks, riverbank cliffs where parrots and macaws gather to eat clay, are a spectacle in the early morning. Lake Sandoval is a quiet oxbow lake reached by a short trail and a paddle by canoe, and Manu National Park lies further west in the same region.

Juanes, parcels of rice and chicken in bijao leaves, and tacacho, mashed plantain with cured pork, are the staples, along with patarashca, fish grilled in leaves, and paiche, a giant river fish. Brazil nuts are harvested across the region, and aguaje fruit is made into drinks. It is hot and humid all year, with rain from November to March and drier months from May to October.
