Experience the best of Trujillo

Trujillo is a colonial city on Peru's north coast, with colourful mansions, the vast adobe ruins of Chan Chan and the reed-boat beach of Huanchaco.

Trujillo lies on Peru's arid northern coast, founded by the Spanish in 1534, and its centre keeps a grid of colonial streets around the Plaza de Armas. Pastel-painted mansions with wrought-iron balconies and carved window grilles face the plaza, beside the cathedral, and the city is called the City of Eternal Spring for its mild, sunny climate. The marinera, an elegant courtship dance, is celebrated here in a national festival.

Just outside the city is Chan Chan, the capital of the Chimú kingdom, a UNESCO site and the largest adobe city in the Americas, with walls decorated with fish, birds and geometric reliefs. The Huacas del Sol y de la Luna are Moche temple pyramids with colourful painted reliefs. At Huanchaco, fishers still ride caballitos de totora, small reed boats of an ancient design, and surfers use the long waves of Chicama to the north.

Ceviche of fresh fish marinated in lime is the pride of the coast, with cabrito a la norteña, goat stew with beer and coriander, and a pisco sour to drink. Sun shines most of the year, and the cooler months from May to October bring a coastal haze.
