Puno stands at about 3,800 metres on the shore of Lake Titicaca, in the Altiplano of southern Peru, with its bay filled with reed beds. The Plaza de Armas is framed by a baroque 18th-century cathedral with a carved stone façade, and viewpoints on the surrounding hills give views over the lake. Puno is called the folklore capital of Peru, for its dances, costumes and music.
Boats cross Titicaca to the Uros Islands, artificial islands made of layered totora reeds where families live, to Taquile Island, known for its knitting and weaving, and to Amantaní. On land, Sillustani is a site of tall stone burial towers called chullpas on a peninsula in Lake Umayo, about 30 kilometres north-west. Cusco is a long scenic day by road or rail to the north-west.
Trout from the lake, quinoa soups, grilled alpaca and chuño, freeze-dried potatoes, make up most meals, and coca tea is the usual remedy for altitude. Each February the city holds a great festival for the Virgen de la Candelaria, with thousands of costumed dancers and musicians. Nights freeze from May to September, and the rain falls from December to March.
