Experience the best of Cascais

Cascais is a former fishing village on the Atlantic coast west of Lisbon, with sheltered beaches, a seafront promenade and a royal past.

Cascais lies at the mouth of the Tagus estuary, roughly thirty kilometres west of Lisbon, and began as a fishing village. King Luís I made it the royal summer residence in 1870, and the aristocracy followed, building villas and palaces along the shore. The old centre has patterned stone pavements, a marina and small beaches tucked in the bay, and the Casa das Histórias Paula Rego is a museum of that painter's work in a red building.

Boca do Inferno, a chasm in the sea cliffs where the waves boom, is a couple of kilometres west. Guincho beach, wide and windswept, is a surfing and kitesurfing spot, and Cabo da Roca is the westernmost point of mainland Europe. The palaces and gardens of Sintra lie about fifteen kilometres north, and the casino town of Estoril is along the coastal path to the east.

Grilled fish, arroz de marisco, a wet rice with shellfish, and plates of fresh clams are the local fare, best eaten near the harbour. Colares, a rare wine from vines growing in sand, is made just along the coast, and travesseiros, puff pastries filled with almond cream, come from Sintra.
