Highlights

Most people see Sintra through a coach window. You'll see it on foot: wild hills, cliffs dropping into the ocean, beaches with no one on them, and the exact spot where Europe runs out of land. Real Portuguese food at the end, and the story of a country told on the ground where it happened.

Itinerary

  1. Santuário da Peninha offers one of the most mystical and visually stunning hiking experiences in the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park. Starting at an altitude of nearly 450 meters, this looping trail (officially known as route PR10) takes you through deeply shaded, enchanted forests shrouded in coastal fog and past ancient stone monuments. It is highly regarded by nature lovers and hikers who want to escape the crowded palaces of Sintra while still experiencing the area's rich history and romantic, untamed atmosphere.

    45 minAdmission included

  2. Cabo da Roca is the westernmost point of mainland Europe. Located in the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, it is famously described by Portuguese poet Luís de Camões as the place "where the land ends and the sea begins."

    30 minAdmission included

  3. Praia da Ursa is frequently cited by international publications—including the Michelin Guide—as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Located just north of Cabo da Roca along the Sintra coast, it is a wild, completely untouched piece of the Portuguese coastline that rewards those willing to make the effort to reach it. Its remote nature and dramatic scenery give it a raw, almost prehistoric feel.

    30 minAdmission included

  4. Praia da Adraga is a stunning, picturesque cove nestled between towering, jagged cliffs along the Sintra coastline. It offers a perfect balance between the dramatic, wild scenery of the Atlantic coast and the comfort of excellent local amenities, making it a highly rewarding stop. Exceptional Local Dining: Praia da Adraga is famously home to one of the absolute best restaurants in all of Sintra: Restaurante da Adraga, which sits right on the sand and serves some of the freshest, most incredible seafood in the region. A Hidden Gem for Budget Travelers: If you want a more casual vibe, there is a fantastic little bar right next door to the main restaurant. It is a local secret where you can eat incredibly well for very reasonably priced portuguese food with a view of the ocean.

About Cascais

Cascais is a former fishing village on the Atlantic coast west of Lisbon, with sheltered beaches, a seafront promenade and a royal past.

Cascais lies at the mouth of the Tagus estuary, roughly thirty kilometres west of Lisbon, and began as a fishing village. King Luís I made it the royal summer residence in 1870, and the aristocracy followed, building villas and palaces along the shore. The old centre has patterned stone pavements, a marina and small beaches tucked in the bay, and the Casa das Histórias Paula Rego is a museum of that painter's work in a red building.

Top-ranked sights in Cascais: Boca do Inferno, Marina de Cascais, Museu Condes de Castro Guimarães.
