Experience the best of Biarritz
Biarritz is a seaside resort on France's Basque coast, with surf beaches, Belle Époque villas and the Pyrenees inland.

Biarritz began as a fishing and whaling village and became fashionable when Empress Eugénie, wife of Napoleon III, built a summer villa here in the 1850s, now a grand hotel above the Grande Plage. Rocks and small coves line the shore, and the Rocher de la Vierge, a rock topped by a statue and joined to the shore by a footbridge, is the town's symbol. Belle Époque villas, a lighthouse and a Russian Orthodox church complete the scene.
Surfing arrived in France here in the 1950s, and the waves at the Côte des Basques and the Grande Plage still draw surfers throughout the year, while the Cité de l'Océan explains the sea. Nearby lie Bayonne, a walled city of chocolate and cured ham, Saint-Jean-de-Luz with its fishing harbour, the pepper village of Espelette, and the Spanish border, with San Sebastián about fifty kilometres away.
Basque cooking uses piment d'Espelette, a mild red pepper, in stews and on cured ham from Bayonne, and the town's pastry shops sell gâteau basque, a cake filled with cream or black cherry. Seafood arrives at the covered market, the Halles. The Atlantic can be moody, summer brings crowds, and late spring and autumn are milder.
