Experience the best of Bergen

Bergen is Norway's rainy fjord capital, a harbour city of colourful wooden wharf houses, mountain funiculars, a fish market and the gateway to the fjords.

Bergen sits between seven hills and the sea on Norway's west coast, with the wooden buildings of Bryggen, once the Hanseatic League's trading wharf and now a World Heritage site, lined along the harbour. The steep gabled houses stand in rows with narrow passages between them. Bergenhus Fortress, with the medieval Haakon's Hall, guards the harbour mouth, and Bergen was a capital of Norway in the 13th century.

The Fløibanen funicular climbs Mount Fløyen, and the Ulriken cable car rises to a higher summit, each with views of the islands and fjords. The Fish Market on the harbour sells seafood. Troldhaugen was the home of the composer Edvard Grieg, who was born in Bergen, and the KODE museums hold paintings by Munch and Norwegian artists. Fjord cruises and trains run to the Hardangerfjord and the Sognefjord, and the Flåm Railway descends to the Aurlandsfjord, where boats sail on into the Nærøyfjord, a World Heritage fjord.

Fish soup, salmon, cod and stockfish, dried in the wind, are the regional foods, and skillingsboller, cinnamon buns, are the bakery speciality. Bergen is one of the wettest cities in Europe, so waterproofs are part of local life. The most settled weather comes in May and June, and the Bergen International Festival fills the same weeks with music.
