Oslo sits at the head of the Oslofjord, surrounded by forested hills and dotted with islands, and it is one of Europe's greenest capitals. The waterfront has the Opera House, a white marble building with a sloping roof that visitors can walk on, and Akershus Fortress, a medieval castle above the harbour. City Hall, a brick building with large murals, is where the Nobel Peace Prize is presented each December.

Vigeland Sculpture Park, in Frogner Park, has more than 200 granite and bronze figures by Gustav Vigeland. Museums on the Bygdøy peninsula tell the stories of Viking ships, Thor Heyerdahl's Kon-Tiki raft and the polar ship Fram, while the Munch Museum and the National Museum hold works by Edvard Munch, including versions of The Scream. Holmenkollen's ski jump rises on a hill west of the city, and ferries run to the fjord's islands.

Brunost, a sweet brown cheese, smoked salmon, open sandwiches, fish soup and cinnamon buns are everyday food, and shrimp are bought straight from boats in the harbour. Cloudberries and lingonberries appear in desserts. Winter snow sends skiers by metro to trails at the edge of the city.
