Ålesund lies on a cluster of islands where the Norwegian Sea meets the Sunnmøre Alps, in Møre og Romsdal. A fire in 1904 destroyed most of the town, and it was rebuilt within a few years in Art Nouveau style, with turrets, spires and ornament in stone along the harbour canal. The Art Nouveau Centre tells the story, and the 418 steps up Aksla hill lead to a viewpoint over islands and peaks.
The Atlantic Sea Park, an aquarium on the coast, shows local marine life, and island villages connected by undersea tunnels lie to the west, with the lighthouse at Alnes on Godøy. Runde, an island with bird cliffs and puffins in summer, lies farther south-west, and the Geirangerfjord, a World Heritage fjord of waterfalls, lies to the south-east. The Trollstigen mountain road is a further drive.
Cod and clipfish, salted dried cod, built the town's wealth, and bacalao dishes, fish soup and fresh shrimp feature on harbour menus, with waffles and brown cheese to follow. Summer evenings stay light late, and winters are mild for the latitude, wet and dark.
